MRI of emotional processing, control and its impact on pain chronicity and impairments in social interaction

Martin Lotze, Prof. Dr., Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology, University Medicine Greifswald, Germany

Emotional processing has a high impact on decision making, social interaction, but also development of chronic diseases and recovery potential. However, work on the interaction of emotional processing with these topics has rarely been published probably because of its high complexity. Functional and structural MRI research had provided considerable insight into these interactions. I will present an overview on several aspects of that topic and will demonstrate recent results of our studies. Some of this research will be focussed on impaired emotion processing after (insular) stroke but also on the role of the emotional processing circuit for the development and sustainment of pain chronicity.
